My Woman Strikes Again!

You all remember this, ft. my bbg, Natalie Portman.

And again she ups her street cred, crankin that and telling them. with Soulja Boy.

Happy (Late) Turkey Day!

I a, sorry loyal readers, I have been away from the desk with family for the last week, hanging at a hotel, and working on some musical stuff with my bud J.R. (from our band, Fatty and Fish Head), as well as shredding the crap out of the UBER - Worthy "Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock" as I recognize our potential. But just because you crave what we have, here's an article for ya.

Americans are reading a hecka lot less.

That's according to a 99-page study, "To Read or Not to Read: A Question of National Consquence," released Monday by the National Endowment for the Arts as a follow-up to a 2004 NEA survey, "Reading at Risk," that found an increasing number of adult Americans were not even reading one book a year. But rest assured, your 9 year old bundle of joy is in great hands, because over half of the 9 year old people read for fun and were sufficient or better in a study. On average, Americans ages 15 to 24 spend almost two hours a day watching TV, and only seven minutes of their daily leisure time on reading. And as far as i am concerned, that 7 minutes includes reading post-it notes left for them and flipping through TV Guide. Dang! Just leaf through a Judy Blume or a Stephen King will yah? I mean, I am 13, and even I Read for pleasure more than half the time. Once I get ahold on a Dean Koontz, It doesn't hardly close until I go to bed. Night Guys! - Tommy

My Woman Named "Stylish"

"In Style" Magazine has named Natalie Portman as the most stylish celeb for 2007! I personally think it was because of my heart-felt homage to her on the yesterday issue. So Nat, you can thank ME for the win. And even though I can'e seem to get in touch, I'm Single! Natalie sounds good with my last name. Just think about it. What do Actor Jake Gyllenhall, Mexican Actor/Director Gael Garcia Bernal, Musicians Moby and Adam Levine (of Maroon 5), and Nat Rothschild (Millionaire banking heir) have that I don't have? (except
an Academy Award Nomination,
A Triple Platinum Record,
BAFTA Best Supporting Actor Win

Billboard Music Award — Digital Artist of the Year[36]
MTV Europe Music Award — Best New Act
MTV Video Music Award — Best New Artist for "This Love"[37]

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Imporium P.S. Importante Announcemente

I just got back from the 1:50 showing of Mr. Magoriums Wonder Imporium, starring two of my favs, Dustin Hoffman, and Natalie Portman, and my MOM's favorite, Justin Bateman. (trust me. it's a long story). Dustin gave a stunningly good impersonation of a nonsensical old man. While the acting was good, and the quirkiness was good, it is generally aimed at a younger viewing audience. Good morals etc. And it features hotsy-totsy, Natalie Portman. (once again, long story). P.S. In accordance with the newest look in The Tommy Blogg's tenure, we will be captioning each picture on the page just like other celebrity blogger, Perez Hilton (whom, as I am sorry to say, isn't quite up to my personal blog caliber). Trust me, it adds a little something.

Shake That Bhutto!

Benazir Bhutto, Pro-Democracy, Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, currently lobbying for a democratic reform, and against the dictatorial rule of incumbent president, Pervez Musharraf, is to today going to hold a protest-based march. But since The Tommy Blogg happens to believe the scoop that Musharraf has LARGE connections with militant groups (or "terrorists" as they could "techniqually" be called) Miss Benazir needs to watch her tail today. We wish her a lot of luck in getting peace and democracy into the wartorn country.

Bhutto Bhutto Bhutto Bhutto Lockin' Up In There

Pakistan's former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto, as many of you already know, was taken into house arrest as of early Nov. 8th, and is not allowed to leave her house. She made few attempts to come out of house arrest but police stopped her. All roads to her house are closed and almost been placed on quarantine is theextent of her limited mobility. She is watched constantly so she doesn't attempt an escape. She has been quoted as saying "I find that whenever I am in power, or my father was in power, somehow good things happen. The economy picks up, we have good rains, water comes, people have crops. I think the reason this happens is that we want to give love and we receive love." We here at TTB will keep tabs on the sitch.

As The Case Peels....

Dateline: Las Vegas, NV - Day 1 - O.J. Simpson Hearing -

Drama-Laced Audio recordings with the accusing collectibles broker who testified that he set up the meeting that ultimately led to armed robbery charges against the former Heisman Trophy winning footballer, former Man athelete of the year 1973 who had gained professional accaim for his playing for the 49'ers and the Bills.
The second day of the hearing will be a deciding factor in if Simpson and two other men should stand trial on 12 criminal charges was set for Friday. But don't worry. Even though Cochren isn't in the picture anymore, he is friends with Bill and Hillary Clinton, so if they were to "accidentally" put a bug in the judges ear, OJ. might ride free again :) In the recording that was played at the hearing, you can distinctly hear Simpson say the following;

"Hey Tom. It's O.J. What are they talking about a gun? All I wanted was my stuff back again,"

Tom Riccio, the man whos recorder that recording was recorded on, was there to testify. a .22 caliber Beretta and a .45 caliber Ruger were found on the premises, allegedly belonging to O.J.'s "accomplice" Walter, and O.J. himself. A little tidbit, Simpson was listed as inmate number 2648927.

Episode III: Dedicated to Paul Norris

Episode III: A Penny Shaved, is dedicated to Paul Norris, Comic Book artist, and co-creator of Aquaman, who died this week at the ripe old age of 93. Good Job Paul. We'll miss your work. That episode, along with the first two episodes, and a hand-made video of mine for one of my fav songs ever, Loser by Beck and some old-school entertainment. Also, the Google searchbar is fully functioning now, and the wikipedia searchbar at the bottom is too. Enjoy.

O.J. Simpson Going (Back) To Court

O.J. Simpson will appear in a court in Nevada today to face charges of aggravated assault, kidnapping and 11 other felonies stemming from an alleged armed robbery in a Sin City hotel room.
A judge is set to determine whether there is enough evidence for a trial. I'm just happy they don't have to try on any gloves :) Three of Simpson’s co-defendants have already come forward to accept plea bargains and testify against the ex football great. And if the judge decides that there is enough evidence, the preliminary may continue into tomorrow and even Saturday. If prosecutors can show sufficient evidence to proceed in a case against Simpson - and he's convicted of some of the charges - Simpson, 60, faces almost certain prison time. One charge alone - robbery with use of a deadly weapon - carries a sentence of two to 15 years. Kidnapping could bring Mr. SImpson a life sentence. Johnny Cochren, where are you whn you're needed? Hypothetically, this could end badly. Then again, Mr. Simpson knows all about HYPOTHETICALLY. We'll keep tabs on the case and bring it to you as on the results. O.J., you have been living scot-free and high-life for a long time. You've been JUICED!

A Night In.... Kevin Federline?

It’s been reported that KF and Paris were seen partying together at a party in Vegas. Think Britney and Paris will get in a cat fight? God I hope so. What would that tape be called? "Hairless, Breastless Fury"?
A better question is doesn’t Britney watch the news? I'm not gay, but if I were in Britney's shoes, I'd be kickin' myself. I mean, when this all stasrted, cute, innocent Britney Spears was dating this ruffian, and NOW, the tides have turned, and crazy, wrinkly, skanky, hairless, psychotic, irresponsible Britney Spears is getting 3 monitored visits a week with her children, Sean Preston (2-ish) and Jayden James (1-ish). Brit-Brit is only 26, and is already a psychotic widow has-been train wreck. The Tomy Blogg will be keeping tabs on
the update stuff, so keep those eyes affixed to the Tommy Blogg.

Me and Athena!

The Tommy Blogg Talk Box: John R. Dilworth, Creator of Courage the Cowardly Dog

In this issue's edition of "TalkBox", I am interviewing the mastermind behind such works as "Courage the Cowardly Dog", Mr. John R. Dilworth.

Q: How did you get into the animation business?
A: I started working as a production artist painting cels ( a mostly obsolete technique used for 80 years ), then I ambitiously rose through assistant animator to animator to director. All through the "process" I made my own films. My "art" eventually lead to the creation of Stretch Films.

Q: I understand the "Courage the Cowrdly Dog" character was developed from an old short you did, as were two characters that could be construed as "proto-Muriel" and "proto-Eustace". Whas it dufficult to come up with these characters?
A: The Chicken from Outer Space was one of my smoothest creations. Courage evolved from a dog named Hamilton on my MTV short, "Smart Talk with Raisin". I had wanted to work with this form of dog since Hamilton was designed. He looks like a elbow bracket. Muriel was also quite easy to design. I based her on a wonderful Scottish woman. Her name is also Muriel. She is the aunt of my former long time lady and current great friend. I used to call Muriel on Sunday and take notes on our conversation. It would be impossible for our writers to come up with the stuff "Muriel" said without it being nearly verbatim. Eustace also came easily. I had a preternatural knowing of what he looked like. I cannot explain it, however I have an imprinting of the face of great depression era farmers.

Q: What projects are you working on now?
A: My current investment of life energy is a monkey short called "Island of Dumb Monkeys" starring two chimp brothers, Chunks & Choogle. I have been developing this cartoon for almost 5 years. I've taken the project around in several incarnations trying to raise patronage. Since I began this idea, there have been many productions starring monkeys, including a soon to be released feature called Space Chimps. Way back in 2002 or so, one of my chimp incarnations had them as "space chimps". I can only acknowledge with a suspicion of curiosity how ideas and time and other unknowns fold over to create similar events. I am very excited to begin production on Dumb Monkeys this July with completion in early 2008. We have finally raised independent financing which is a big departure in the way I seek funding. I really love these brothers. They are free of blame or guilt, qualities that are in rare supply today.

Q: Since you created a "Cowardly dog", I should ask, what are YOUR fears?
A: My fears are that I will not be able to continue making films and slip off into a black void through the capricious nature of envious or jealous characters like tv executives or colleagues.
Q: I understand you also did work on the late '90's - early '00's cult favorite "Doug". How was that?
A: "Doug" was a landmark for NYC animation. Nicktoons had created this new initiative of programing that included "Ren & Stimpy" - which I also did a guest directorial stint after the creator was removed. The series gathered together artists who all shared a similar naivete of the looming future, the digital revolution. We touched a non-plastic world where the objects engaged our bodies much more than current tools. I was a vendor suppling the series with storyboards and other "special" design needs.

Q: So can we forsee "Courage" ever starting up again? If no, then will it be sold into syndication or hit the "big screen"?
A: I do not believe Courage will ever return. There simply isn't the merchandising support. I was told in the hallways of CN in Atlanta way back that buyers were hesitant to sell boys a "pink" dog, that no one would buy it. I never thought Courage was "pink", more violet having more blue than red. The show was also expensive to produce for the network.

Q: Come to think of it, why did "Courage the Cowardly Dog" go out of primetime circulation?
It can't be because of lack of fan response, because that show got more of a following than a lot of cartoons out there today. They just don't make 'em like they used to do they?
A: I cannot answer this question only because the agendas of programmers are completely off the planet from creators. Courage continues to and has been broadcast since it's debut in 1999. I know because I get residuals from SAG, which is the only way I keep track of the show.

Q: Anything else you would like to say to me or my loyal folowing?
A: Only that I am deeply grateful for the continued interest in my work. I am en-courage-d by the many fan emails I receive and for the level of appreciation conveyed for the effort my staff of unique creatives and I put into every episode. I always wanted to be famous for giving back to audiences some genuine quality like laughter. I personally love to laugh and to be silly. I live a fantasy where people are not given to greed or wickedness. I like the idea of the Shakespearean fool who knows more of life and human nature than the king does and yet choses to remain the fool.

Q: It was awesome having you on "TalkBox". Hope to get a follow up and I wish you the best.
A: I am more pleased than I can express. My very sincere gratitude. Anything more I can do for you and your vision, all you have to do is scream!

Release Date Fixer

The announcement by The House of Tomorrow (The official website of The Magnetic Fields) states that NOT as mentioned in the interview (which was conducted earlier this year) the album "Distortion" by The Magnetic Fields is scheduled to be released on the 15th of January NOT the 22nd. Thanks readers.

I Have A Thing

I am the first to admit a secret that is burrowed in the deepest recesses of my soul. So I would like to let my loyal readers know that I have a secret thing for older women. I have had a crush on Meryl Streep for the last 3 years.

Aside from that, I think I should get some sleep so I can post the next interview and next entertainmentocity for you tomorrow.

The Tommy Blogg Talk Box: Claudia Gonson of The Magnetic Fields

This week on the Tommy Blogg Talkbox, I conducted an interview with Claudia Gonson, who plays some instruments and sings some vocals for the critically acclaimed indie pop band "The Magnetic Fields". I got all nerded-up when I got this reply from Miss Gonson. Here is the interview transcript.

Hi Tom,

I'm happy to answer these questions for your blog. In answer to your request to get in touch with the others, I don't think the other guys will go for it. Sorry about it- they're not really into doing interviews, save Stephin, who gets so many interview requests that I need to be careful how many I send his way.

Here's some answers for your blog-- hope you enjoy them. Thanks for writing!

Q: How did you and the band "The Magnetic Fields" come to be?

A: We all went to school together, in one form or another. Stephin and I met when we were about your age (well, I was 14, he was a couple years older), and we went to high schools that were near one another. I also went to high school with Sam, and Sam and I eventually ended up at Harvard, where we met John. Stephin came to Harvard as well to take some extension classes and we all ended up taking a lot of the same courses.

Q: Who do YOU consider musical influences on yourself?

A: I don't write much music, so I don't really have many musical influences, save the classical composers that I performed while I was studying classical piano all during my youth. But I like to listen to a lot of female folky vocalists, ranging from Nanci Griffith to Joni Mitchell to Neko Case. I also like Fleetwood Mac, and David Bowie. I am a big fan of the performance artist Laurie Anderson.

Q: What are your bandmates like on a personal level?

A: It's a big question, and sort of like asking someone what their friends or family members are like. I've known these guys for over 20 years, so it's a hard question to answer. We all get along well, but obviously sometimes we argue and have problems and have to work stuff out. Everyone in the band is pretty smart, and we try hard to plan things efficiently so that we have an easier time with tours and recordings. We're all pretty grown up.

Q: How does it feel to have such a loyal following?

A: I hope that it will remain! I worry about that stuff, since I manage the band as well as play in it. I think that something that has helped us is having lots of records over many years, rather than only one big album that soared up the charts. It seems like bands who have one period of huge success tend to burn out fast (unless they're Madonna or Prince or Elton John or some long term superstar). But bands like Wilco and Yo La Tengo or Stereolab are lucky because they burn on and on, making lots of records and slowly building up and up. But they also don't tend to have one album which sells millions of copies and defines their careers.

Q: Has stardom affected your life in any way?
A: I'm so unbelievably not a star. I walk around New York and am absolutely never recognized by anyone, ever.

Q: As far as television, what do YOU watch the most?

A: I don't watch TV. My tv doesn't even have cable access, I just use it for DVD's and videos. I'm somewhat of a luddite. I do occasionally rent TV shows-- just watched all seasons of Gray's Anatomy, for instance. I watched a bit of the Wire on DVD as well. I liked the gay shows-- L Word and Queer as Folk (especially the UK version!), and obviously I was a big fan of Buffy when it was on the air. Someone just lent me "Arrested Development". Oh... I liked "Freaks and Geeks" a whole lot.

Q: As personable as you and Stephin are, Sam (Davol) and John (Woo) seem QUITE reserved and quiet. Is that the same deal in real life?

A: yeah, they're pretty quiet and private people. Nice guys.

Q: I hear that a new Magnetic Fields CD is coming out in 2008. Any things you can "accidentally" leak out to my readers?

A: The release date at this time is Tues, Jan 22 on Nonesuch. I'd be happy to leak stuff about it if I felt that things were definitely happening, but I'm paranoid- maybe we'll end up changing the album title or some of the tracks and then I'll be wrong! One thing I can say is that it sounds very different from other albums we've done. But, it's still us four playing on it, and playing our same instruments (piano, cello, banjo, ukulele, guitars). Also, our friend Shirley Simms, who sang a bit on "69 Love Songs", does some lead vocals on this album, as well as Stephin.

Q: What kind of sound can we expect from this new one? more of a synthesizer-y thing like previous, or more of an instrumental thing like "i"?

A: See above... very different, yet similar instruments.

Q: Are you working on any outside projects or soundtracks being worked on now?

A: Stephin is working on a stage version of "Coraline", a young adult short novel by Neil Gaiman. There's also a film version of that book in the works, but we're not working on it. It's just the stage musical that Stephin's working on.

Q: I understand you are openly lesbian. Do you feel that you have been an inspiration for other LGBT children?

A: I was with women for a while, but my most recent partner is a man. So, I guess I'm not a lesbian anymore. I hope that people feel comfortable being whatever they are. I have to say, the best advice I can give to a person who isn't sure about their sexuality is, it's ok to be whatever you are, and try not to beat yourself up about it. When you are gay, your straight friends might treat you weird, but when you are straight, your gay friends may treat you weird too! It's important not to take any of it too hard. People have all sorts of agendas and most of the time they have nothing to do with you.

Q: What sort of equipment do you play on?

A: I am a piano player, and play a regular acoustic piano. For a few tours we rented me a grand piano, but it was a bit cumbersome and loud, so now we tend to rent me an upright acoustic piano.

Well thank you a helluva lot for participating in the interview Claudia!
